Carole King Compillation Creation!

Carole King-based mixed tape.

Okay, really a CD or three. I have recently re-committed to my life-long love affair with Carole King. I've seen the musical Beautiful, I've read the memoir, and I've been listening to all the old albums.

I've decided I want to make a playlist for my three sisters for Christmas (or earlier if I get it done), that is a mix of about 20 to 30 of the best recordings by Carole King singing her songs, and about 20 to 30 of the best recordings of other people singing her songs. (By "her songs," I include everything she's written either by herself or with others including Gerry Goffin.) Here's the longest list I have found of the songs she has written, but really I don't know if a truly comprehensive list exists anywhere.

So, what would you pick for either category (King songs recorded by King; King songs recorded by other(s))? In the first category, definitely including Beautiful and So Far Away. In the second category, definitely including versions of You've Got a Friend (JT), Up on the Roof (so many choices!), and Natural Woman (Aretha).

I have somewhat of a preference on this project for studio recordings over live recordings.

And Carole, if you are reading this, I buy my music on iTunes or CD, and I will only make three copies of this mix.

Some instrumental covers that I really enjoy are:
The Crusaders - So Far Away
Phil Upchurch - You've Got A Friend
Boogaloo Joe Jones - I Feel the Earth Move

Chicken Soup with Rice from Really Rosie is a great song (as are the rest of the Really Rosies - my favorite is Alligators All Around), and it has a Christmas reference in it, if you want to get a bit of the seasonal theme in there.

Aww drat, I interpreted "written with others" as "written by others", but I guess Maurice Sendak doesn't count.

Just in case you haven't seen it yet, I can't recommend this set of her classic songwriting demos enough. Carole's original versions of some pretty damn iconic tunes.

You should have Oh Neil, her response to Neil Sedaka's Oh Carol. I would also recommend you watch Girl Groups, which has a fair bit about King and what she did.

Can't say I'm a big fan of easy jazz, but this take on So Far Away by the Crusaders is really quite fine ... particularly once they get to jamming.

Response by poster: Moonmilk, she wrote the music, so your answer is responsive as the lawyers say.

Response by poster: PS to mykescipark, I bought the Demo album and have been listening to it all day, thanks!

Apparently, Laura Nyro's best selling single was her cover of Up On The Roof.

(Also, Laura Nyro singing her own compositions would probably make some nice interludes in a Carole King mix-tape...)
