Strange USB behavior on laptop

My laptop has been having problems recognizing USB devices recently. Either it takes a really, really long time for the device to be recognized, or it's recognized nearly immediately but the device doesn't perform correctly. For example, I have a wireless bluetooth mouse that used to work, but currently the USB receiver is recognized (it makes the connection sound) but it doesn't read input from the mouse. I attach my phone, and either it's not recognized at all (despite making the connection sound) or it's recognized as a CD Drive instead of as a removable drive. No major changes to the system recently, aside from having the Norton subscription that was on here run out and replacing it with MSSE. The problems started before switching the AV software, however. It's a Win7 64 bit system. Other information available if needed.

Does the laptop have more than 1 USB port? and the results of trying a different port are? Look in the device manager (right click on 'my computer', choose properties, choose hardware tab, choose device manager) - does everything look okay?

Response by poster: Yes, more than one port, and yes the same behavior regardless of the port. After a while port functionality gets back to normal responsiveness, but within the first (rough estimate) 20 minutes of operation it's extremely slow.

Let me check on the device manager...

No red exclamation points or anything.

what i would probably do at this point is make myself a bootable linux usb drive and try to boot from that and see if the usb problems persist. (if you can get a usb drive to mount... if not use another computer)

if they do: hardware problem... if they don't, it's probably time to reinstall windows.

Go to the support>downloads section of YourLaptopManufacturer.com. Look for any usb specific drivers, or chipset drivers.

Go to the device manager, right click ALL the usb stuff "usb root hub", everything in that category and click "uninstall".

Run the installers for the chipset drivers, and any USB drivers if they were there.(seems common on a lot of systems with USB 3 if you have that)

And i'd like to say, i'd personally try the USB thumbdrive linux test before i'd bother with this. USB ports get screwy on laptops a lot more commonly than you'd think, and it isn't even always just one port that goes bad.

On this 3 year old Asus G53J with usb 2.0 and 3.0 ports the 3.0 port dies after a single use or if I put the computer to sleep. It resurrects on on hard reboot. Sometimes it will keep working if I perform a eject port such as when I use an NTFS thumb drive. The usb 2.0 ports are intermittant, one of them works all the time the other two randomly disconnect and reconnect. The only thing that works consistantly is a hard reboot and being sure to eject the drives when I use them. My suspicion, this being an Asus, is that the solder connections between the connector and the board are developing cracks.
