Mobile App Versus Mobile Optimized Website

Four years ago, we hired a 3rd party to develop a mobile app for our not-for-profit business league. It’s pretty basic. The main functionality we wanted and got was a membership directory. Since then, we have completely revamped our website, which is now optimized for mobile access. All of its functionality, including the membership directory, is perfectly and conveniently usable on a smartphone. So, is there any point in keeping the app?

Although we have not updated the app since launch, it works perfectly fine, to include in iOS 7. For bonus points, if there are good reasons to maintain the app, why is it important—if it is important—to update it? What’s it missing that isn’t there already?

Thank you!

For a lot of people the convenience of having an app is like having a bookmark. I know I can just go to Wikipedia in my iPhone's browser but I always click on the app because it's easier. I also realize that I can bookmark websites on my home screen, but I am lazy. A lot of people don't actually realize that they can do that.

In iOS, Web apps can have a home screen icon.

My company developed an app for one simple reason: you can send push notifications from an app. If this isn't an issue, I'd stick with the site and kill the app.
