Help my brain not turn into mush at work

I get a little bored at work, and like to read sites and articles dealing with maps, current events, GIS, science, natural resources, women in tech, cultural/material history, and archaeology. But, I don't want to look like I'm not doing work. Solution, email! What are the best digest or listservs I can subscribe to?

Some other caveats: these have to be non-html, ok to look at at work, readable in outlook, and all content should be in the email [I shouldn't need to click on a link to get the full article/entry].

My computer is viewable to any who walk by. Assume strict email and internet security settings, so nothing that is too wonky.

Anything related to the stuff I listed is ok too...those are just a few interests I got off the top of my head.

... women in tech, ...

I've found plenty of interesting information and discussions in the Systers mailing list.

You might like RISKS-L, which deals with technology gone bad, much of it tied into current events. Subscription information is here.

It's not email, but: there is usually great non-fiction at longform.org, and if you use Instapaper, you can read the articles all nicely formatted for screen and ad-free. I principally use Instapaper's iPad app, but there's a web portal to your saved articles as well. It all looks pretty generic to someone just passing by.

The listserve is one.

find a book at Project Gutenberg

copy paste the text, and e-mail it to yourself - then read a classic novel while appearing to be working!

You could try DailyLit, which will email books to you on whatever schedule you like. Because it's mostly free books, the emphasis does tend to be on classic fiction, but there are also non-fiction books there.

There are also RSS services that will email you when blogs you specify are updated - this one lets you customise the title of the emails you receive, which would probably help you stay undetected at work. Sign up for a few big sites like Wired and you should have plenty of emailed text to keep you occupied.
