i need to find the exact time of birth for a U.S. birth

My husband was born at Mt. Sinai hospital NY and they were obviously my first call. The medical records department say that they don't hold records for more than 10 years and my husband was born in 1966. Both his parents are dead and they were both only children, so there is no one in the family that we can ask. Does anyone have any other ideas where the exact time of his birth could have been recorded? And how to go about finding out ? All suggestions welcome.

Is it not on his birth certificate? I have one from 2000, and it's on there.

This is usually listed on the long form birth certificate in many states.

You need a "long form" birth certificate. Contact the New York City Board of Health.

You can order New York birth certs over the phone. Check if it is the long form -- I think it is but if it is not, your husband will have to order it himself through a longer procedure.

The long form birth certificate will cost you about $50 bucks from NY. I just went through this last year.

Long shot: I got my birth records when I was in my mid-twenties. Officially my hospital did not keep records that long, but the person I talked to on the phone arranged for someone to check through the old paper archives and found my records which were still there. Worth asking for a supervisor or going in person if feasible?

It could be in the "announcements" section of a local newspaper. our admittedly small town daily paper still prints these with the daily arrest/court appearances, but I think you have to request to have it put in.

another place to check is a "hometown" paper, if your husband was originally from a different area, or had grandparents or other relatives in other places.

I'm not sure if you can find out. My mom has no idea what time of day I was born and when I've got the "long form" it doesn't say anything about time.

Any chance that he has a baby album? It might be in there, or on a birth announcement or commemorative piece someone made at the time (cross stitch, for instance).

DarlingBri, that is a NYS website.

I had to get a replacement (short form) birth certificate for myself in 2000; I found out then that New York City maintains its own birth certificate records separately from the rest of NY State. If you were born in a hospital in NYC (as I and the OP's husband were), you have to contact the NYC Board of Health instead.

I'm confused. I too was born in New York City, and just ordered a copy of my birth certificate from Vital Check. They do births and deaths for all of New York, both city and state.
