Is there a way to highlight the previous Chrome tab I was using?

I usually have 40-50 tabs open in Chrome, if I receive an email or whatever and switch to that tab I often have a hard time remember what tab I was just on. An extension to highlight the previous tab would be very useful, I can't find anything like this, anyone?

There are several extensions like Recent Tabs that let you switch to your last-used tab via keyboard shortcut.

Otherwise, highlighting the last-used tab is pretty simple and totally doable with the Chrome extension API. Someone could whip such an extension up pretty quickly.

A good keyword for searching this is "MRU", for "Most Recently Used" - as mentioned, there are quite a few extensions to handle it. I have used Quick Tabs, which presents a filterable MRU tab list on configurable button press.
