Safari cache?

Why does Safari reload images each time it goes to a page? Shouldn't they be in the cache somewhere?

I've only just noticed this. I recently uploaded my redesigned site. The top of every page is exactly the same: 2 logo jpegs and 6 linked navigation jpegs. If I click on a navigation jpeg to go to a different page, the 8 images get reloaded from the server. If I use the back/forward buttons then they don't get reloaded, so they must be cached on my computer somewhere.

I've checked the site in Mozilla and Opera and it works correctly - once those 8 jpegs have been loaded they get used by every page.

That shouldn't be the case. Safari caches files just like other browsers. The cache is in ~/Library/Caches/Safari. You could check the permissions on that folder and see if something is awry maybe. Or you could check your server logs and see if the files really ARE being served up every time, or if it's just Safari being slow at loading from the cache (or something).

(What OS version & what Safari version are you using? What sort of response have you gotten from Apple's support & discussion pages?)

Are you running something like Safari Enhancer, which lets you disable the cache?

Response by poster: D'oh! I emptied the Safari cache and it's all fine again. I guess Safari was confused as to whether to use the images on the server or the cache of local images on my hard drive left over from building the site.

Dang! A week's worth of AskMe wasted!
