Quirky Brazilian Music to accompany a clown invasion

In 2011 a group of friends and I had a clown invasion on Ipanema beach. I'm currently making a video of the set up and event, and need music to accompany it. Ideally it would be quirky and fun, with a definite Brazilian flavour. In my head I'm imagining a Brazilian twist on the Amelie soundtrack. Current reasearch has led to Chico Science & Nação Zumbi (a little hardcore), Adoniran Barbosa, João Nogueira, Paulinho da Viola, Zeca Pagodinho and Alceu Valença (who are all very nice, but...not exactly quirky), and O Teatro Mágico, who definitely seem like a fun band, but are a bit poppy. Any suggestions? If it helps, this photo shows what we ended up looking like.

Not entirely "Brazilian" sounding, but Sao Paulo's CSS might do the trick, esp. their "Alcohol" (which I assume fueled the clown invasion, in part...) The video is very cute.

Anything from this compilation, maybe the first track.

Egberto Gismonti's Circense (full album on YouTube doesn't play in my location, maybe it will in yours?), Chico Buarque's soundtrack to The Great Mystical Circus (O Grande Circo Místico - grooveshark link), def check out Pato Fu on YouTube, Os Mutantes could also fit the bill. Tulipa Ruiz is a more contemporary act that could work!

Novos Baianos - Vamos Por Mundo

I'll try to think of more after work.

Response by poster: Amazing everyone! Thanks for all the tips. I've just found about 3 new favourite bands, so thanks for that. No idea how I'm going to sort through it all, but.........

First, a Facebook friend's tip, Martinho Da Vila. A lovely start to this song — are those clown noses? The group singing is also pretty good. Another good start (but could do with some instruments).

Then to Tom Zé. Brilliant (but a little overpoweringly weird). 1 minute of someone brushing their teeth? And it's great that it keeps speeding up — will be fun to edit to. Also brilliant, but would love the song to eventually "break" into a tune. The muttering in the background of this one is great.

Onto the "best albums of 2012". "Chicha Libre" (#20), Cabruera (#17), Maga Bo (#11), Meridian Brothers (#9)

Same site, the last song on this mix.

Onto the next site, "Soul Jazz Records". #2, Os Mutantes, #3 Gal Costa; 5. Caetano Veloso — Alfomega; 8. Caetano Veloso — Irene; 9. Os Mutantes — Ave Genghis Khan; 19. Caetano Veloso — Lost In The Paradise;

As for O Grande Circo Mistico, I had high hopes for "Valsa Dos Clowns", but it was the last song on the album, Abertura do Circo, which was best (once it broke).

Okay. Onto Egberto Gismonti. A scan of this album brought up, at 27:10, a quick, quirky song that's in with a chance.

Vamos Por Mundo is hilarious — perfect. Onto some of their other stuff. This one, this one, this one, this one, this one.

Sheesh!

It looks like you may have found what you're looking for, but i just wanted to throw out "Os Mutantes" as an option. Definitely quirky and Brazilian.

I was thinking Mestre Ambrosio. There's this, for example.

I mess up the link for Tom Zé. Try these: o amor é um rock, Tropicalia Jacta est , the recent jam o motoboi e Maria Clara. This dude has a deep catalog. Dig into it, I am almost sure you will find what you are looking for.

Response by poster: I thought you might like an update on the music I've chosen (so far), and how it's being used in the film. Thanks everyone! (P.S. this is an unlisted vid, zero editing corrections...let's not spread it around)
