How do I thank the vet?

My sweet kitty died today. He passed away before we could get him to the vet, quickly and, I hope, painlessly. He's been sick since the beginning of the year and we've spent a lot of time at the vet; they've been terrific. I'd like to send them something as a token of thanks. What's appropriate? Chocolates? Incredible Edibles? Just a card? Any other ideas?

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Does your vet's office take food donations, or any other sort of donations for the sick animals they are boarding?

A card with a photo of your kitty and a note letting your vet know how much you appreciate the attention is enough, I'd think.

Very sorry for your loss.

I like the idea of offering donations for other sick animals AND a thank you card with a photo.

Oh my heart breaks for you :-(

My wonderful vet appreciated a donation to the veterinary school that she graduated from -- they have a program to research small animal diseases as well as a few other issues dear to her heart and she made a donation in Boo's name, which is how I found out about it. You might ask the staff if there is a cause your vet supports.

I really feel for you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. What a beautiful kitty.

Joining in with those that think that a card and perhaps a donation to help care for other sick animals would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry, the loss of a pet can be so hard. And what beautiful eyes!

In addition to whatever else you do, you can review your vet on yelp and/or other online websites (this is especially helpful if the office doesn't have very many reviews yet). Your vet will appreciate a positive review, and you will also be helping other pet owners find a good vet.

Nthing Donation and Card.

I really like the idea of paying it forward, and I think you care givers will, too.

Donation and card. Hand delivering would be nice. Thank you for being so kind and thank you for treating your pet friend so well.

A nice card would probably be well appreciated. If they have a "good Samaritan" fund or whatever it would be nice to donate to that. Also I agree that reviewing on Yelp, etc., is another nice way to share how awesome they have been.

Nthing a donation and card. Or, if you're not well in funds, then donating a cuddly small blanket or two, to line the crates for the animals being boarded there, would also do well.

(I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll try and let Zach know to watch out for your little boy.)

I work in my family's vet hospital. Nthing a detailed Yelp review of their practice. A thankful card is also nice. In my hospital they typically get put on the wall and read by many people (vets, staff, and clients). You can include a photo. PS the one you linked is beautiful, condolences.

Response by poster: Thank you so much, everyone! Not only for the fabulous ideas (I'm not favoriting anyone because they're all great), but also for the condolences. I was craving both the good advice and the kind words I knew I would get from Mefites.

We'll do it all: write a nice thank you card, find out where we can donate, review on Yelp, and take over all of our cans of food - we have plenty! Each of these will make me start to feel better.

Janey47 and EmpressCallipygos - Boo and Zach are beautiful.

Our cat very recently passed away as well and we made donations of food and supplies which were much appreciated. It made me feel a little better, too, to think that we are helping other cats. I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm sorry about your kitty. Our vet staff is a wonderful bunch. I could carry on about them for pages.

Your guys would probably appreciate a card and a picture of your kitty. Also, they might like some support with their adoption efforts, or temp-homes, or maybe even the donation of a cat-carrier or some such. You can't give your kitty a better testimonial than helping others in need.
