A question of fashion

Here is a picture of a person wearing a jacket. What material is this jacket made of? Are there any retailers where I could get something similar for a 46-48 waist?

Twill/gabardine. Might be wool.

Possibly sharkskin? But not the really shiny kind. The pattern might be described as gray crosshatch.

Looks like a jacket from The Kooples from 2011 (either the styling has changed slightly or that version is somewhere less obvious on their site). Says it's wool and cotton.

I have a jacket with identical pattern that's wool. I got mine years ago in a run-of-the-mill store in a Toronto mall. (I can't remember the name, but it's one of the mid-price range stores that sell suiting jackets). I had to get mine altered - I'd shop with that in mind. (for me it was shortening the sleeves). I think it cost around $100-$150.

You're not likely to find these in summer - around August/September the fall suits will come in and you can look for this type of garment/material.

(Of course thrift shops may provide earlier, but that's at your discretion).

Previously, I think.

Best answer: That's a 10-month weight Italian wool. It's couture: you can tell by the soft roll of the lapel and the felted wool under the collar. Check out Luciano Barbero, one of a few houses known for this exact kind of jacket. (Warning, charming-to-me but probably annoying to you "catalog"!)

US Retailers are the high-end ones: Saks, Neiman Marcus, Barneys, maybe Brooks Brothers Black Fleece (although that's Thom Browne, the cut might be narrow).

Best answer: Its really just a standard gray twill jacket - Which is usually a lighter, but not super light weight fabric. Its probably 100% wool but it might have some cotton mixed in. It looks like all wool to me though. I'm not sure how one can recognize where the mill is from a pic but thats not really germane to your question. Also most decent sportcoats will have the felted back of the neck - that's not really a mark of "Couture" and the soft roll of the lapel is a function of being properly canvassed and a decision on how to press the lapels. In other words this is not a rare jacket, nor is it by definition an expensive one if you can buy off the rack.

you are looking for a size 56 or so sportcoat (jackets size by chest measurements - usually about 8 inches or so bigger than your waist, although for heavier body types the difference might be smaller. For you specifically I'm might suggest a narrow lapeled jacket like this is not a great choice. Its not a look that works for bigger guys - it throws the proportions out of whack. Also you'll need to hit place that do big and tall stuff - which by definition makes it more expensive. Honestly you'll be a lot happier if you get someone to make it for you - which should cost $500-$600 vs maybe 75% of that for a high quality off the rack sportcoat.

If you do go off the rack Nordstroms is probably your best choice. I'd also guess that there will be a men's store in Denver that will fit the bill as well.

Oh also - I'm not sure a gray sportcoat is the best choice as your only piece of semi-formal wear. Especially a lighter gray. Better to get Navy.

By the way, you have good taste, she's a fashion blogger extraordinare.

And I thought this women's jacket was pretty darn close.

Yep. That's a definite example. There are others. The material on the model looks stiffer, though, so sharkskin's a possibility.

I'm not sure there is much sense in sending someone looking for a size 56 jacket to Thom Browne
