Pioneer Receiver Impedance Question

My friend's birthday is coming up and I want to surprise her with an upgrade to her lousy, blown-out speakers. The problem is, I can't sneak a peak at the back of her receiver to check the impedance and I don't want to get incompatible speakers accidentally. I hear 8-16 ohms is the standard? Does anyone have a Pioneer VSX-3900S they can check out? Much obliged.

For future reference, any home speaker that isn't part of some kind of oddball closed system is going to be 8 ohms.
