what even is this bug

Tell me what this bug is so I can go to sleep or set about burning down my house.

No AC currently, so between humidity and open windows lots of things are getting in. Immediately before finding this guy I tossed out an oriental cockroach, but those are pretty rampant in my neighborhood and they tend to prefer to live outside, so not as worried about that. But this thing, while I think (and hope) not a cockroach, is so nondescript I cannot successfully google him. Thoughts?

Response by poster: Oh, and he's about 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch long, by the way.

Yeah, that is a cockroach.

When I lived in an urban area in the northeast, we'd get a few of them every year around this time.

Response by poster: I'm fairly certain he's not a roach. His wings are definitely opaque, which the internet tells me is not a cockroach thing. Also they don't fold up on each other but sort of meet in the middle cleanly.

Best answer: click beetle. flip him on his back to be sure.

Response by poster: Yes! That is him, he is that. He does not even damage corn, apparently and happily.
