Help with FTP program selection

Can someone suggest a user-friendly and free FTP program?

I'm currently using the FireFTP for firefox, but it's driving me nutty. Everytime I try to load an image to my site, firefox crashes. I've tried everything from shutting down all other programs, to not opening anything on Firefox except the FTP tab. But no. Snake eyes every damn time. I'm not a power user. I have just one dinky site and I'll be uploading infrequently, so I don't need something unweildly. But I'm very much a visual learner, so the interface needs to be something I can look at and understand. Not a thousand buttons with weird pictures that don't give a clue to its function as a bomb launcher.

Help?

I'd second, er, third Filezilla and also recommend Tango DropBox for simple uploads.

FireFTP extension for Firefox, if you swing that way

Fifth Filezilla. I'd never used FTP before I got it, and found it very easy.

Have they updated the free version of WS_FTP since it was first released in like 1995 or so? I used it up until I found Filezilla, and then dropped WS_FTP like a hot rock after comparing the two.

I'll second SmartFTP. I've used it for ages and its very nice. Beats the heck out of ws_ftp.

I have used CuteFTP for quite a while, it is very straightforward like the old MSDOS Shell or Nero. Just drag and drop between windows to upload from your HD to the server folder.

:cough: :ahem:

Anyway, count me as another vote for FileZilla, by the way, as if you didn't already have enough of them.

AFAIK the newer versions of WS_FTP are very much like the old ones.

I'm guessing you're not on a Mac, but for those who are, Transmit rocks. It's one of the very few pieces of software I've liked enough to pay to get rid of the nags and time limits.

If you can get SFTP access to your account that'd be much better all round. And then you could use eg. WinSCP.

Also, have you tried Windows Explorer's built-in FTP support? Just bang a url ftp://user@server.example.com/ in the address bar and off you go.

Another vote for CoreFTP but I'm off to investigate FileZilla based on these multiple replies. I have an old license for the most excellent CuteFTP on one machine but as far as I know they don't offer a free version for home users.

I vote SmartFTP. FileZilla seems more for a poweruser whereas SmartFTP is just straight up. However, FileZilla is open source, if that's important to you.

FileZilla also supports SFTP, if you care (and it's a very cool app). And if you are on a Mac, Transmit really does rock.
