What was that loud booming sound this morning in South Seattle?

Sounded like a sonic boom or really low-pitched gunfire.

I heard a loud booming sound early this morning around 4 or 5. One loud low boom followed shortly after by two or three more in quick succession. I've been checking the police blotter, the fire dept. dispatch website, the Stranger Blog and the Seattle Times blog but haven't found anything. Definitely didn't come from my neighbors. I distinctly heard the higher frequencies of the sound come through the open window.

Reminded me of a sonic boom or perhaps gunfire. I'm in N Beacon Hill, South of the Central District, by the old Amazon building.

Did anyone else hear anything or hear any reports of any big ol' sounds this morning? Did my half-asleep brain turn a common sound into something more extreme?

It could have been a power transformer going. They sound like that.

Another one I hear on humid evenings/early mornings is trains coupling.

I'm on the north end of the CD and thought it was gun shots. But we're far enought apart that I'm now thinking it was something bigger.

I am with MoonOrb. We are in Ravenna (just North of U-District) and heard what sounded like fireworks around 11-11:30pm. Didn't think much of it until now. Probably unrelated but I will be watching this thread.

Could it have been the demolition mentioned in this construction project?

"With the end of the school year — and thanks in part to $10 million in tax free bonds from the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, Capitol Hill’s Seattle Prep is digging in on a $26 million overhaul including the demolition of one of the oldest buildings on the 108-year-old campus to make sure the school’s 700+ students make it safely through the next big Seattle earthquake."

I think the Ravenna booms were in fact fireworks - I was heading home around midnight and came across a set of recently-launched mortars at the corner of 12th and 56th or thereabouts. UW graduation parties, I expect.
