Visually impressive movies

So, I have a super-nice HD projector in my possession for the next 24 hours. What should I watch on it? (Preferably TV shows or movies)

Koyaanisqatsi already came to mind, as did the Lord of the Rings. What other visually intense/impressive movies should I put up on my 'big screen' while I have it.

Baraka.

For that matter, the BBC documentary Planet Earth. Actually, your time is limited; Planet Earth it should be.

The recent BBC doucmentary series Africa is pretty spectacular.

Response by poster: PS, I have a strong preference for things that have a plot or story in addition to their visual impressiveness, though all suggestions welcome!

Avatar is perhaps not the greatest movie ever, but it is freaking beautiful.

Best answer: Something else to consider:

If you've never played your favorite video game on a big ol' projection screen, it's..... glorious.

This is kind of a trite movie, but I absolutely love it on a big TV: "Twister". Especially if you have a 5.1 sound system.

I would kill to watch Akira Kurosawa's "Ran" on a big screen. Or Tokyo Olympiad, a purely visual sports documentary. Black Sunday is fantastic to look at if you get inexplicable warm fuzzy feelings from sepulchral ruins!

The Conformist
Red Desert

Both make amazing use of colour and landscapes, as well as being great films in their own right.

Just for looks, you'd be hard pressed to do better than the BDs of Avatar or Speed Racer.

The first episode of Planet Earth, "From Pole to Pole," which overviews the entire global ecosystem from north to south. One of the most visually spectacular things I've ever seen -- you could pause it at almost any moment and have an image worthy of a desktop background. YouTube has it available in HD for just $1.99, though I'd try to rent it in Blu-Ray for the full effect.

The Big Blue.

Note: the long version is long, but the short version doesn't make sense.

The Fall and Days of Heaven definitely.

Also, think about old extravaganzas like Lawrence of Arabia, the Wizard of Oz, or Gone with the Wind.

BBC's Planet Earth. Spectacular in HD.

Or perhaps the original Star Wars -- that was a series that was definitely made for the big screen.

The new Snow White and the Huntsman was visually excellent.
I suggest watching it on mute so you don't have to hear KStew try to act.
But it is worth watching because it is just so beautiful.

I watched Finding Nemo on my parent's gorgeous television and was blown away. It was so crisp and colorful. Other beautiful movies (besides The Fall): I Am Love, Tree of Life, Edward Scissorhands, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, A Serious Man, Skyfall, The Fountain, Where the Wild Things Are, Shutter Island.
