I want to take a walk up the street and find a place like the YMCA.

I've been thinking of joining a gym for the first time in my life, primarily because I live alone and work from home and it would be good for me to have a place to go to be around other people once a day. So, I am looking for a gym to join. I just checked out the one nearest me tonight but was discouraged by the fact that the facilities seemed dirty and smelly and crowded. Buffed Toronto Mefites, what gyms can you recommend for someone who lives in west end Toronto (between Lansdowne and Dundas West subway stations), and wants a convenient, clean, and inexpensive gym to join? I'd like to do weights and the occasional exercise class in whatever (pilates, yoga, or kickboxing are all fine). I'd love to be able to swim too, but realize that isn't compatible with inexpensive.

I'm assuming you've decided that the west-end YMCA is too far?

Response by poster: It is a little far, yes, or perhaps more accurately, not that far but too awkward to get to quickly via TTC. It'll take me at least half an hour's travel time each way, probably more like 40 minutes.

I think there's a goodlife around there somewhere.

U of T, is 20 minutes away via Train, has a pool, and classes, and good community rates.

This might seem like an odd suggestion, but my understanding is that Jewish Community Center at Bloor & Spadina is an excellent facility and not at all limited to Jewish people. It's further from you than the west-end Y, but because it's on the subway line might be an easier connection for you. It may be on the pricey side, though.

There's also a city run gym at the recreation center at Lansdowne & St. Clair. If you're a relatively short walk from the 47 Lansdowne, that would be a straight shot on the bus for you. Some of the city gyms are decent and some of them are not, so you'll want to check it out first, but you can usually just pay a drop in fee and go once, so that's a low commitment option.

Bloor Street Fitness is very close to Dundas West Station. I suspect, however, that it might be the one you think is dirty, smelly and crowded.

The Jewish Community Center is lovely, but gives a lot of money to Israel, which might change yr opinion.
