ID this plant?

Asking for a friend; please help ID this particular bit of shrubbery.

Maybe a Japanese Barberry? Here's another picture that shows its shape when it's a bit more unruly.

I don't think it's a Barberry. Looking at the close up of the foliage, it looks more like a Box-leaf Euonymous.

Neat looking plant! It looks like a well trained cotoneaster species, maybe Cotoneaster adpressus.

I was also going to guess Cotoneaster. Has it produced any berries?

Also thinking Cotoneaster. For years I pronounced it incorrectly cotton-easter.
