Mac screen sharing via Messages

Three friends are using Messages on MacBooks running Mountain Lion. Friends A and B are both able to use video chat and screen sharing with Friend C. Yet Friends A and B are unable to use video chat and screen sharing with each other (the video chat/screen share menu items are grayed out.) What gives?

Are Friends A and B using the same Apple ID?

In the Video menu for Messages for all three computers, are Audio Chat, Video Chat and Screen Sharing Enabled all checked?

Also, does audio work? Are all three on AIM?

In the Video menu for Messages, there is a 'Connection Doctor' option. Within that window, there's an option on the drop down for 'Capabilities'. That should tell you if it's a Bandwidth issue on one side or the other.

Response by poster: Under Connection Doctor, we both have all green checks, and it states no bandwidth issues. I also tried wired and wireless connections. Audio, video, and screen sharing are all enabled for both of us. That's why it's so mystifying...I ruled out settings since both of us are able to video chat and share screens with third parties, just not with each other.

Response by poster: We are not all on AIM, but we are all on gmail and iMessage.
