Bands that sound like or inspired by Booker T and the MGs

I love Booker T and the MGs and that fusion of synthesizer as the lead vocalist in a funk band... are there any modern bands replicating this style?
Or even older bands I should check out that match the style?
(bonus points if any other made a Christmas album nearly as badass as Booker T and the MG's "In the Christmas Spirit")

Best answer: Definitely The Meters, especially the earlier albums. And more recently, The Diplomats of Solid Sound.

Best answer: The James Taylor Quartet and not as similar but check out Herbie Mann's 'Live at the Whiskey A Go Go'.

This band, doing a cover of Lauryn Hill's Everything is Everything? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASHV-Vt4eCM&feature=related
Not sure if I like that live version better, or this studio version:
