Where can I get green tomatoes in New York?
And no fair saying things like "at a farmer's market". I'm going to pickle these guys, so this is serious business...I want names, MeFi. Name and addresses. The more specific the better.

Response by poster: Oh, sorry...I meant New York City...does Gentle's ship? I'd bet green tomatoes ship well.

What's wrong with the Greenmarket at Union Square Park?

Best answer: D'Agostino also sells green tomatoes.

yup...the Greenmarket in Union Sq. is your best bet, and they'll be fresher than Dag.

Response by poster: Nothing's wrong with the greenmarkets...I just wanted to find a place that would definitely have them. The greenmarket's great for browsing, but supermarkets are better for targeted buying (imo).

Best answer: paul_smatatoes, do some scouting. Go to Union Square or the green market nearest you (schedule here) -- this time of year, just about every market should have at least a couple of stands selling tomatoes. Pick out the one that appeals to you most and talk to the farmer about what you need. Chances are, he or she will be happy to bring whatever you want the next time they're at the market You may get a price break as well.
I've done this several times, with different farmers; I'm happy because I get exactly what I want, they're happy because they've got a guaranteed sale.
This is a bit more involved than just popping into a supermarket but you'll get much better, fresher produce. And frankly, I've never seen green tomatoes sold as such at a supermarket.
What are you canning, if I may ask?

Response by poster: vetiver, I just got this sudden passion for pickling my own tomatoes...good advice, though. I pass through union square almost every day, so the next time I'm there, I'll check out the people with tomatoes. thanks!

I used to work at an apple stall for a farmer - she'd happily bring in special orders like a half a bushel for someone who arranged it ahead of time.
