What is this thin, elusive book called?

Need help identifying book.

Could you help a librarian friend of mine with a book search? One of her patrons came to her with this question, but our Google-fu is failing.

"I got this book as a gift in the 80's. It was very talked about at the time. The book was thin and I read it in English, in paperback. It contained five or six short chapters, and through the stories in them a woman's entire life time was covered. All the chapters were about waking up in the morning, from waking up as a little girl, as a mother, as an old woman. I think that the author's first name might have been Eva."

Any ideas?
