Can't remember the name of a certain game. Care to help?

Game felt a bit like Mass Effect, but it predated ME. Searching has been fruitless thus far.

I played a game for a relatively short amount of time about 6 years ago. This game definitely came out before Mass Effect 1. The beginning involved maneuvering a spaceship into a docking station, being implanted with a translation device so that a friendly alien ship can inform humans of an impending attack (their estimate was that it would be within weeks; it turned out to be on the very day), returning to the human station and witnessing enemy aliens slaughtering humans, and escaping the station to a nearby moon or planet with some type of craft. I didn't play past that.

From what I can remember, there are no special powers available (such as biotics); combat relied purely on weaponry.

Similarities between the two:
* 3rd person perspective
* science fiction, space-age, action shooter genre

Differences:
* no party system
* no character class system
* no flying from planet to planet; game progressed completely by storyline (although I didn't play far into the game)
