How do I take care of this bird?

Found this fledgling on the footpath at Cornell today. I made the mistake of thinking I could help it and took it around to an ornithology person I know. They weren't there, so I looked on the internet and determined it was a fledgling, and that if I took it back where I found it, its parents would probably pick it up again. So I left it on a nearby perch. But I came back a couple of hours later, and it was still in exactly the same position. I figured the parents were gone, and have brought it home. I have it on my enclosed porch at the moment. I'm going to take it to a rehabilitation center tomorrow (suggestions welcome.) In the meantime what kind of bird is it and how do I take care of it? It seems to like pine nuts. And did I make the right or the wrong choice by bringing it to shelter for the night?

Leave it alone. One way or another, nature will take care of it.

Previously...

And Chocolate Pickle is right. Leave it alone. At the bottom of the linked thread above, there is a PDF that tells you what to do when you find a baby bird.

Response by poster: Thanks, Geck. That flowchart suggests I contact a rehabilitator, which I intend to do in the morning. The question is what to do in the meantime.

Sure there is.
FOUND A BABY BIRD:

- If the young bird is hopping and running away from you, leave it be. His parents will find him.
- If he is in immediate danger of outdoor pets, scoop him up and put in a nearby bush or shrub out of harm's way.
- If you find a baby with little or no feathers and you know where the nest is, then return the bird to its' nest.
- If the baby/fledgling is cold to the touch, take it inside to warm before placing back in the nest.
- Nestle the bird in a warm towel or use a hot water bottle with a towel between the bird and the bottle.
- Place the bird in a warm dark, quiet place away from children and pets.
- Do not attempt to feed baby birds or fledglings.
- If you cannot find the nest or the bird appears to be sick, injured or your pet brought the bird home still alive, then contact us.

I would leave a very shallow dish of water (make sure the little guy can't fall in and drown). Don't worry about food. Don't worry about anything else.

Response by poster: Unfortunately, it was dead this morning. I will move more slowly with regard to such matters in future.
