Father's Day, help me deliver the goods...

Father's Day Help Request: Name the book that meets the following, slightly circumspect, critera: Russian author (potentially female), very popular in the 1950s and 1960s (may also have been first published then), acted as a good example/expose/lesson in conservatism and liberalism?

So this came up in a conversation with my dad today and I told him I might be able to figure it. I've had luck with polling the hive mind here before for things like this so here goes...

The question basically says it all but if some of the facts are wrong or your guess doesn't quite match up then I'd say go ahead and ask anyway, it may very well be the book in question.

I asked him if it was Anna Karenina and he said no.

My russian author chops are non-existent beyond that so I come to you, hope me and thanks in advance.

Best answer: Ayn Rand. Atlas Shrugged came out in 1957.

But seriously: Russian as in "originally published in Russian," "written by a Russian dissident," or "the author has a Russian-sounding last name"? Can you provide more context here?

Response by poster: Dad told me it was a Russian author, I don't know if that means Russian expatriate or Russian-in-last-name only. Further I don't know if it means translated from Russian to English, but It'd lean towards no.

I like to think that Dad would know Rand and Atlas Shrugged, but I'll quiz him on it since I'm calling him now anyway.

MORE INFO: He did mention that it was a large book, upwards of 500 pages. That sounds Rand-ish so let me get some further information if I can. Update to come.

Response by poster: Ding ding. It's Rand. Blame my assumptions that he'd know of Rand and not ask me for the name. Thanks Nomyte.
