Overnight in Newburgh, NY - late dinner / early breakfast recommendations?

I'll be stopping overnight in Newburgh, NY on a drive to Vermont this weekend - I'll be getting in around 8PM Sat., and plan to eat early on Sun. before heading out. Does anyone have restaurant suggestions for a late dinner and breakfast?

Bonus points if the breakfast spot lets me look at the Hudson while I'm eating.

Pro-tips from anyone who knows the city well RE: crime will also be appreciated, since a cursory look suggests there is a lot of it.

I've stayed there a few times, at the Newburgh HoJo (which I'd recommend).

For dinner, there's your usual suspects of fast food, but I would recommend a Chinese food place next door to the Target on Route 17K, in the plaza. I forget the name, and I doubt it has an internet presence, but it's pretty obvious where it is, once you find the Target.

It looks like a dodgy place, but it's excellent, excellent Chinese food. Very popular, as well. Humungo portions. We stumbled on it quite by accident, but were very pleased.

As for brekkie, I don't have any suggestions, since we ate the complimentary brekkie at the HoJo (make your own waffles!). Sorry. I would guess one of the diners (which there seem to be a few) or doing the quick trip to Beacon, which has a LOT more going on in terms of food. It's no time at all to get there, either driving or with the ferry.

Crime seems to be a bit of a problem downtown (which looks rough), but out by the hotels and plazas and strip malls out by the main highway, there were no issues whatsoever. Even downtown, we didn't experience anything, those times when we left our car at the ferry dock for the day. As long as you are reasonably careful, and don't invite trouble by leaving stuff in the car or whatever, I doubt you would have any issues, knock on wood.

Yeah, looking at it, there are quite a few dining options available in Beacon, all along Main Street. Doing a rough google, there seem to be a few brekkie places among them, although not for the earliest risers. Beacon has a bit of a reputation as an emerging culinary destination for folks from the City, although I couldn't suggest any one place over another.

My suggestion is to NOT explore Newburgh at night if you're not familar with the town. The city has had a pretty serious crime problem for well over a decade. Beacon is your best bet.

The Thayer Hotel at West Point is on the way up to Newburgh (about 20 minutes away). The tavern off the main dining room has a very nice view of the Hudson. The historic setting is spectacular. Quality of food and service has varied greatly over the years. I don't see the hours online but I guess 8PM is ok; you might want to call.

I grew up in Newburgh, and I have a few family members who still live there. Crime is a definitely a real problem, especially in some of the more dodgy areas downtown, but there are other parts of town that are very safe, suburban, and even affluent. Use common sense and you should be fine.

There are some newish restaurants on the waterfront that I haven't been too, but that that might fit the bill for what you're looking for for dinner... Cena, River Grill, Havana 59. Ok, some of these look a bit cheesy, but maybe worth a shot? For breakfast I would probably go with one of the many diners.

Or, as suggested above, Beacon is a cool little town (much more interesting than Newburgh) right across the river with lots more restaurant options. You could just wander down main street and choose something that looks interesting (sushi, cafes, etc).

Oh, I'm a bit north of where you are! Which way are you driving? There are a lot of diners on 9w if your travel involves that road (I like the Alexis). However, my favorite place with a view (of the hudson and some trains and a waterfall!) is the Raccoon Saloon in Marlboro. Go there for dinner. It's in a great, historic building and their food is really excellent. Especially their burgers (great burgers) and sweet potato fries with their homemade ketchup.

Both are in very safe areas.
