How to to find deals on cell phones without new service?

Is there anyway to find good deals on cell phones without new service?

I really want to get the Treo 650, but I have a long time left on my existing Verizon contract (over a year). The difference in price is like $199 (w/ new service) to like $600 or $700 (no service retail), which is pretty ridiculous. Any suggestions?

Not on new cell phones, no. You can find some great deals on older ones, though.

Contact your provider. We have Cingular and wanted to upgrade our phones about 8 months before we were due for new ones. They had something called a "good service exception" or something like that and this waived the time limit, allowing us to get our phones at the "new user" price.

Call Verizon; it can't hurt. If you call and it doesn't work, try online. If that doesn't work, try going into a store. There may be different deals each way.

Does Verizon offer a family plan? My wife and I are Tmobile customers, and I just add a new line to my family plan (for an additional $10 per month - at least here in Portland, OR) when I want a new phone. I take the SIM card out of my old phone (line #1 on my plan, with my wife's line being line #2) and put it in the new phone and use the new phone as my primary phone. I then sell the old phone on eBay (I don't actually use the SIM card for line #3). The eBay sale helps defray the additional $120 per year I have to pay for the third line on the family plan. And after the required one-year contract , I cancel the third line. You can get great deals on cell phones at Amazon. You can have up to five lines at a time with Tmobile's family plan, so you can get new phones a couple of times a year if you want.

I found a good deal on an unlocked Treo 650 through PriceGraber. I bought mine for $570 from NewEgg (+ $5 FedEx Saver Shipping).

EBay. You can get essentially new phones there for half the price of mint-in-box ones.
