I didn't call you. My iPhone did.

Why is my iPhone dialing a number repeatedly?

It's a friend's number and it's in my contact list. Yesterday and today my friend called me to say, "Hey, I see you called me. 2 or 3 times, in fact."
Except I hadn't. Still, the calls show in my call history.
My phone was on a surface, I think, not in my pocket. It sleeps after a few minutes, and the password lock goes on after 15. I'm pretty sure the password lock was on during these outbound calls.
It doesn't seem to be a Bluetooth headset initiating the 'recall last number dialed' function, because it happened today with no Bluetooth around. I've now disabled Bluetooth on the phone, just in case.
Any idea why this is happening?

my friend had something similar happen after his iphone got slightly damp in a boating accident. there were a lot of other electronic gizmos in his bag (camera, gps, netbook etc), all of which came out fine, except for the iphone. which also worked fine, except for the facetime-ing 2-3 random people in the middle of the night every night thing.

the geniuses were unable to offer any help whatsoever, other than to tell him to buy a new one. fortunately he lives in singapore, where they practically give the things away if you renew your plan (in fact i think they literally did just give him a new one for signing a 2 year plan, even though his old 2 year plan was only 18 months in!)

so, if you think water is the root of your problem, maybe i'd skip the genius bar, lest you out yourself as an iphone wetter, and just send it to be repaired - at least if it's still under warrantee.

Water is not going to cause something this specific. Technology doesn't work that way.

Perhaps you'd do well to start by doing a factory reset. See if the problem happens again. Then reload from a backup and likewise see if it repeats. If it does then there's something installed on the phone (and in the backup) that's causing the trouble.

is voice control active ?
I think pre-siri, a long press on the home button would activate voice control. In my case, it would then proceed to always call the same guy - someone who had a very hard to pronounce name for some reason.
