Wireless vs wired video streaming to my TV - Help.

Why does Windows 7 "play to" work on wireless but not wired?

I have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 router and a cable to a Panasonic Viera P55VT30 and a 802.11n wireless connection to my laptop running Windows 7 with Windows Media Player 12. The tv has a DNLA connection which allows me to use the "play to" function on the Windows Media Player video library and stream video from the laptop to the tv. So far, so good. Only situation is - this only works when i'm on wireless. The viera as a "media device" (and by extension the "play to" function) disappears as soon as I disconnect the wireless and use a regular network cable. With the cable I still have an internet connection, and a local network connection, just no "play to" option. Everything comes back as soon as I take the cable out and turn the wireless back on. Is DNLA inherently wireless? What can I check in my network settings? All permissions are "on" with regards to sharing and streaming.

Best answer: Hi alchemist, I see no one answered yet, so I’ll give it a try…
First it’s not clear if the cable connection is from the router to laptop or from laptop to TV?
Other than that, if I understood correctly, the Panasonic Viera P55VT30 comes set for wireless (i.e. the Cable In input is set to Not Used), so maybe it’s only a simple setting issue. For this you need to go to the Input menu and select cable input.
If it’s not that, it could be related to your DLNA settings. I understand that your Windows 7 laptop serves as the DLNA certified media server. Now do as follows:
1. You need to make sure that both TV and laptop are configured on the same network.
2. Press the Viera Tools button on the remote control and select the DLNA option.
3. At the prompt you need to select the DLNA server to which you are connecting (e.g. your laptop)
But why not stay wireless if it works ok? The wireless LAN adapter that is provided with the Viera P55VT30 should have pretty good layout flexibility.
Hope this helps some, Dani

Response by poster: great advice, thanks! double-checked everything, and it's back! But looks like it also gives acceptable streaming over wireless so now I have the best of both worlds (still stops/starts when I try to stream 1080p over wireless). Thanks!!
