Late night NYC

What to do late night in New York that is not drinking centric?

My wife is coming into NYC late Friday (~10:30) and we're looking to not waste the evening. Normally we'd hit some nightlife and bars but she is 4 months pregnant. Any suggestions for evening activities that happen after 11 that don't involve a bar or club welcome. We'd also have some time to kill in this time period Saturday night after we see a concert. We have a car so Queens and Brooklyn included. Thanks!

Best answer: I love taking the Staten island ferry, round-trip ride, late in the evening. It's peaceful and inspiring.

Sleep No More! No alcohol necessary, but you'll both need to be up for a few hours of walking around and climbing stairs. This play is amazing, immersive, and unlike anything I've ever seen.... and you can probably make the 11 or 11:15 showing.

The Landmark Cinema, on Houston at about....1st Avenue, has a quirky late-night schedule on Friday and Saturday nights. Looks like this week it's an "adult" version of "Alice in Wonderland"; other times I've seen things like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

If it's a more "adult-oriented" film, sometimes they have even more fun and screen a vintage trailer for a 70's porn film mixed in with the other trailers.

If you're a fan of Korean food, Kum Gang San and Woorijip are both open all night, located on 32nd between 5th and 6th. Same goes for the yakitori places on St. Marks - I prefer Yakitori Taisho myself. And the East Village is generally fantastic for late-night wandering, it seems like almost everything is open at least until 2am.

Best answer: Sleep No More is awesome but also very tiring. The late show ends at 2am. Also if you're talking about this weekend, or one coming up soon, the show is sold out for normal tickets. You can get in through VIP tickets but they've very pricey. Last I checked: Premium Access is $125 per person (Monday-Thursday) and $162.50 per person (Friday & Saturday). Might be higher now.

Second the midnight movie idea. Both IFC Center and Landmark Sunshine do them.

Also second looking at the UCB schedules and if anything at Comedy Cellar works.

I'd also throw in some wandering of Times Square into the mix. Good people watching there.

The Empire State Building stays open late on weekends now and has a live jazz musician.

It can also be fun to han gout somewhere like the Ace Hotel lobby, Lambs Club lounge, the bar at Eleven Madison Park. The latter has excellent non-alcoholic beverages on the list. But you might want to dress up a bit.

For a great meal at 11pm on a Friday, I'd do Momofuku Ssam Bar, Blue Ribbon Brasserie, Balthazar, Minetta Tavern, Spotted Pig, the Breslin... A lot of places are open until 12am or 1am.

Or go to the famous halal cart on 53rd and 6th, southwest corner.

Max Brenner is open till 2:00am on Friday nights.

(I don't actually like chocolate, so I can't vouch for its quality; I just know it exists.)

Best answer: My friends and I were always fans of Kyotofu for late night desserts with a quirky twist. It's open until 1:30am on the weekends.

Additionally, we were always up for karaoke. There is a cheaper Korean-style karaoke place in St. Marks called U2, but on weeknights, it might be kind of hard to get a room. There are also a bunch of places in K-town and on 33rd. I also adore St. Marks eats late at night: Kenka! Pomme Frites! Baoguette! Tkettle! Wafels & Dinges! Pinkberry, in both St. Marks and K-town.

If you go to K-town, you should definitely check out Gahm Mi Oak for their well-known ox tail bone soup.

Finally, if you feel like a little ping pong... I have a friend who always raves about SPiN, which is open late at night on the weekends. I've never been, but I get the sense that at night it is a bit clubby.

I didn't look for any when I was in NYC, but in Korea board game cafes are quite popular and really fun. I heard there were a few popping up here and there, and I'm sure you could find one easily on yelp or google worth checking out.

Hope y'all have a fantastic weekend :)

Response by poster: Thanks everyone. We I had a great weekend. Friday when she arrived we stopped by Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Saturday we started with a walking tour of Greenwich, I found a good guide luckily last minute as I did not have a ton of time to schedule out a day myself. . . we hit The Chocolate Bar for egg creams, Il Cantuccio, The Blind Tiger, Faicco's Deli, Mamoun's and the Half Pint. . . then we walked up to Chelsea Market and High Line park. We had dinner at Momofuku Ssam Bar and went to the concert at the Beacon Theater.

Sunday we started in Brooklyn at Bagelsmith, stopped at the Brooklyn Brewery (ok, so some drinking for me:) and then hit the Brooklyn Flea market. . . then we went into Manhattan and went to the Guggenheim and stopped in Central Park briefly.

We finished with hitting some Japanese spots in the East Village around St Marks. . .Yakitori Taisho, West udon and Chikalicious Dessert Bar (in place of Kyotofu)
