Wireless access point with updates

Recommendations please: wireless router. Caveat: needs to be kept up-to-date.
I'm in the market for a new wireless router. It needs to have four gigabit ports, not put out much heat, and not be big.
Why another wireless access point question? I want to receive updates. I'd like to try something else.
dd-wrt seems pretty dead, and OpenWRT is the obvious alternative, but can someone tell me about other options, perhaps running vyatta, hostapd, or RouterOS?

I have a pfsense (firewall/router) dedicated box from netgate, you can get them with a wireless card to serve as a wireless access point as well as your firewall, or simply use them as a firewall/router and use an old wifi access point as your wifi bridge (turn off DHCP on your wifi router, don't use the WAN port)
I'm not sure what 'I want to receive updates' really means, are there features you're missing? Is something not working properly? Generally network hardware is bought for what it is, you want a faster radio (802.11n, or 802.11ac) you have to buy new hardware..
