Engagement Ring Settings

Where to buy an engagement ring setting (only) in Scottsdale, Arizona?

My boyfriend proposed last weekend with a loose family stone, with the intention that we would pick out the setting together. I love this idea, but neither of us has any clue where to begin. Is it as simple as just going to any jewelry store? I'd like to avoid the mall stores. And I'd like to avoid somehow indirectly supporting the diamond industry, despite the fact that we're not actually buying a diamond. Does anyone have any recommendations for a local store in Scottsdale, Arizona or the larger Phoenix metro area?

It depends on the setting. If you wear the stone in a solitare "Tiffany-style" setting, yes, it will always appear as if you are engaged and not married. I'm not sure this appearance really matters though.

We had no problem asking a regular jeweler to set our family stone in a ring design we liked.

We even shopped around to find a design we liked and had the eventual jeweler remove the stone from its previous setting, which didn't cost anything additional.
