Point Me to Good Histories of Ancient India

I need recommendations for histories of ancient India, with particular emphasis on the role/influence of the Hellenic states, development of Buddhism, what might have happened to the Indo-Greeks in the longer term, etc. Also, it would be interesting to read about Alexander's invasion and its aftermath from the Indian viewpoint, i.e, by Indian scholars using Indian sources.

Do look through the bibliography of Amartya Sen's The Argumentative Indian. I don't have my copy handy, so am unable to cite specific works.

The part of India that Alexander reached is pretty much all in Pakistan, so you may want to look at Pakistani historians' work, as well. I believe Mubarik Ali might be a useful scholar to look up, although I'm not sure how much he has published in English.
