Give me the pictures, I'll give you the Woah!

For lent, this year, I'm giving up looking at sardonic pictures on the internet. Help me find those amuse yeux that lack the mocking overtone and yet aren't just kitties and other insipid cuteness.

After watching the Bill Cunningham documentary, wherein he essentially walks away from Women's Wear Daily because they used his pictures to belittle the subjects, rather than his intended glorification, I realized want to embody this ideal myself.
I only want to see things that are amusing unto themselves, not at the expense of the subject. This means no more looking at fml or failbook or awkwardfamilyphotos or happyplace or damnyouautocorrect etc.
Please then be directing me to tumblrs, pinterest thingers, shakes etc, that glorify the awesome, without denigrating the other.
I don't have any raging fandom-on for anything to otherwise channel my interest, just your typical wide-ranging nerdiness. So guide me, MetaFilter, where are the good image aggregators that don't step on any necks in the process?

Places of earnest Beauty on the Interwebs:

Old Chum, blog of the proprieters of the Old Faithful Shop

An Ambitious Project Collapsing, old images, new images, interesting images

Room 26 Cabinet of Curiosities, from the collections of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale Uiversity

and finally, beautiful in its own way, Internet K-Hole

I can do this all day...

Give me some more specifics and I can tailor links to your taste. I've had an un-challenging office job for the last 6 years...

Urban ruins? There are some good sites on this post on the Blue. Standing but not Operating hasn't been updated for a while, but has lots of pictures of abandoned amusement parks. Not on the site but worth a look- Six Flags New Orleans. This site has a lot of photos of the abandoned area around Chernobyl. I also like Forgotten Chicago and Deadmalls.com.

Futility Closet - "An idler's miscellany of compendious amusements." Not always funny, but always interesting.

Arthur Recreates... - A baby recreates scenes from classic movies.

TJS Labs Gallery of Graphic Design is one of my favorite sites too. Lots and lots of vintage print ads from 1930-1969.

Wow, concierge service... well, if it's possible to be even more polly-anna-ish, I love Internet K-Hole (and bighappyfunhouse) but I have 2 additional strictures: First, I'd prefer SFW, or at least labelled/default blocked for NSFW stuff. Kinda like on the popular page of mlkshk. Second, like that popular page, I like for it to be updated at least daily, if not a few times per day. Old photos are fantastic, but contemporary pics are good too, provided they've been filtered with an eye for the earnestness/beauty or whatever you call it.
Finally, I care not at all for fashion or inane cat pictures, unless the cats are wearing costumes, holding stuffed animals or talking in all caps.

If you want something that's still bite-size and silly, but not completely cheesy, I like animals talking in all caps

It works for my sense of humor, but I think it might not work for a lot of people. I like it because it's over the top ridiculous, and it doesn't give me the feeling of making fun of its subjects that you describe. I'm with you, that dynamic rubs me the wrong way, and I try to avoid it.

You mention pinterest. Are you looking for individual pins, boards to follow, members to follow? What sorts of categories? I go through regular pinterest binges, and might be able to scrounge up some stuff that works for you. Are you thinking pretty pictures, funny pictures, vintage photos, projects, food?

George Takei's facebook is routinely awesome, and I can't think of any cases of him posting mocking things. Well, he mocks homophobes and bigots.

I found this after I checked to see if my title was in fact an original coinage.

Response by poster: Hokay, so two things that I found in the lenten days (and now my happyplace et al habit is cured!) of abstinence which surprised and delighted me:
http://unlikelywords.tumblr.com/... He guest hosted Kottke for a bit, and I liked his style. He also has a non-tumblr blog.
http://bunnyfood.tumblr.com/ Less than asinine, mostly, animals, always with some humor, occasionally sardonic.
