Tech startups, how many?

How many new companies start each year in the tech biz? My google-fu/techcrunch-fu/linkedin-fu is failing me. Anything is appreciated: in Silicon Valley, in the US, globally, in 2011, over the last five years, since Adam met Eve.

What do you mean by "start"? Two guys in a garage paying for stuff with their credit cards? Three students forming an LLC but not getting farther than a great idea but no product? A group of people pitching a VC firm and getting $10k for renting an office space?

Then I don't think the question is answerable, though of course I could be wrong. Because who would care to measure the two guys in a garage, and how could that be measured? Likewise the kids with a great idea but zero actual product? They form an LLC but then two graduate and the other goes off for a term abroad and their "startup" dissolves after three months. Does that count, and if so, who would be doing the counting?

i have never seen a single number to attempt to quantify the number of "two guys in a garage" startups, to take care of one leg of the problem.

I agree with other responders that this question can't really be answered.

A quick google search yields this FAQ from the Small Business Association, which indicates that something like a half million new businesses are started each year in the US. What percentage of those would qualify as a "tech startup" and how accurate the SBA data is, are open questions.
