I'm looking for a small-ish bottle of good absinthe, in DC, somewhere metro-accessible. By Friday. Oh, and I don't want to spend more than $30 or $40. Please hope me? (I don't care for it myself, this will be a gift.)

I've never bought it myself, but Chinatown Coffee has absinthe nights every Friday; I would bet if you gave them a call, they could let you know where they get it.

Calvert Woodley Liquors (by Van Ness) and the liquor store on P just off Dupont (the name escapes me; it is within 1-2 blocks of the circle on the south side of P) also seem like possible stockers.

We bought a fantastic variety of single malts and good bourbons at Schneider's, on Capitol Hill (it's not far from Union Station), so maybe give them a call to see what they've got in stock at your price point.

I'm pretty sure Sherry's Wine and Spirit (Woodley Park) would have absinthe, but I'm not sure whether it would be at your price point.

Wide World of Wines on Wisconsin Ave (nicely alliterative!) is bus-accessible from Georgetown and Dupont Circle. You might give them a try.

I don't want to be a nay-sayer, but I'm pretty up on the US absinthe market these days. To the best of my knowledge, there is no absinthe worth drinking that comes in small bottles or sells in a full bottle for less than $50. Generally speaking, $60-$70 for 750 ml is an entry-level price for an absinthe that isn't garbage. And some of the best ones, such as Nouvelle Orleans, are in excess of $100.

There is one absinthe I've seen sold in a half-bottle size, and that's Edward III "Modern" Absinthe. As the modifier suggests, this is not a traditional product. In addition, it appears to be in the less-well-known "white" style rather than the "green" style.

Response by poster: Thanks, all! I'll make some phone calls before I hit the Metro after work this week.

I've gotten some general advice on brands from a friend who buys his through mail-order, and I knew the price for full bottles was high...was just hoping there was such a thing as a smaller bottle.
