midi synth

Can I use something besides the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to play midi files in Windows?
When I play a midi file, I want to be able to choose the samples that play for a particular General Midi instrument. So that instead of whatever acoustic guitar sample they have, I can replace it with one that sounds better.
I know I can do this with VSTs within a host DAW, but I just mean for files I'm playing with say Windows Media Player.
Would SoundFont work? I have a creative X-Fi Soundblaster.
I just don't think the quality of the GS Wavetable Synth is good enough.

Yes - you can use TiMidity++ with soundfonts. People seem to like Fluid R3 in particular.
