East side veloway?

Is there somewhere on the east side of Austin that would be good for outside skating?

I love the veloway, but it's so flippin' far away from everything that I can't get down there as much as I'd like. Do you guys know of anywhere more central (I live on the east side) that would be a good place to (roller) skate? I started google street view-ing a bunch of park trails, but I figured it'd be faster to come here and ask. So far the trails I've found are all gravelly, which is not so great on skates.

Any ideas on places to check out?

Going to be hard to beat the veloway... I don't know anything about east austin but I've not seen too many places like it.

There are a lot of barely-trafficked, well-paved streets at Mueller.

Are you a roller derby skater? If not, you might want to check with TXRD or TRG to see where they skate when they are not on the track. A lot of my fellow derby skaters skate outdoors to work on endurance.

Response by poster: Yeah, I skate with TXRD -- another skater and I were talking today about exploring to finding a place closer than the veloway. I've heard conflicting stories on Mueller -- I'd like to check it out though.

Isn't there a big paved loop inside the Oakwood cemetery across from the baseball field? Looking at this map, it looks like the side streets on the north end are unpaved, but the stretch between Comal and Leona appears to be big loops of asphalt pavement.

Not sure how good it is for skating, but I recently saw a bunch of people skating in the bike lanes on Great Northern Blvd in central-ish Austin.
