September 11 article

There was an article that came out in a well-known magazine a few years back about September 11. Help me find it.

The article was in a popular news magazine (Time, Newsweek) and it had by-the-minute of what occurred that morning, including the individual lives of the people on board that plane (like what times some of the passengerse woke up to catch their flight). An online version of this article would be greatly appreciated.

Best answer: I think it was in Vanity Fair. I sort of remember reading this.

I know that's right. It was Vanity Fair. I only just threw away my file of all of those. I think it was possibly that extra insert that had all the pictures in it, but I could be wrong. I can't find an archive of Vanity Fair online with FullText.

Best answer: Der Spiegel had a reconstruction of the tragic day's events. They published a book - Inside 9-11: What Really Happened - which is "a comprehensive account of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The book is divided into several sections, including a chronology of the events of September 11."

I am struggling to recall which magazine article you seek. Did I seek it in New York magazine? I've been searching their archive - to no luck.

A related piggyback question -- are there any real time videos of the news coverage of Sept 11th. It has so been flattened into snapshots, and it was so bewildering when it happened, that I would like to watch the first three or four hours in real time to help reset my perspective

This is not the article you are looking for but it is a comprehensive account of what happened at the WTC on September 11, 2001.

Two of the reporters who wrote the above article also wrote a book that expanded on the article:

The Washington Post did a great reconstruction that started with people waking up that day. It ran as two big parts and was written by one of their star writers. I'm afraid I couldn't find it, but it's been reprinted in some "Best of" 2001 newspaper writing books.

Response by poster: The idea that it was in Vanity Fair rings a bell. If there was only a way to find an archived version of it online somewhere.

(Also, the New York Times article submitted is wonderful, but not exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, anyway.)
