Hyperlocal info sought re: Metrolink and Union Station in LA

I'm trying to figure out the best way to walk to the Metrolink trains at LA's Union Station from where I work.

I'm commuting by rail for the first time in my life, and this morning was my first ride (great, but expensive). I work about a mile south of Union Station, and walked a somewhat indirect route from the train to the job this morning; I'd like to do better this afternoon and in the future.

Google Maps suggests that I approach on foot from the east side of Union Station (Santa Fe Ave to Central to Ramirez to the driveway), entering through the more modern structure rather than the old art deco side on Alameda. Can I get to the Metrolink boarding area from there, and will I be able to identify the correct loading platform for the train I want to ride?

The Metrolink (and Amtrak) boarding area runs east/west and is accessible from both the east/Alameda side and the west/Patsaouras Plaza side (it connects them).

The lower numbered platforms are located on the east and the higher numbered platforms are located on the west. Trains generally leave from the same platform every day, barring exceptional circumstances (delay, equipment failure, etc).

There are digital signs in the boarding area that indicate the train that is leaving from that platform. In the west/Alameda side, there is a big board that lists all of the platform assignments as well as any delay information.

I commuted daily from Union Station from 2007-2009, and the big board was generally more reliable and useful than the individual platform signs. This may have changed since.

So, if your train generally departs from the higher numbered platforms and you cut it close, use the east entrance. If the walk to each side is about equal, I'd prefer the west entrance because Union Station really is a beautiful building, and you'll be able to glance at the big board. Also, because if you miss your train you'll be able to grab a drink at Traxx.
