What do I need to assemble a simple LED light?

Can anyone recommend a book or website to help me in making a small led light?
I need a puck sized light that will rest at the bottom of a sculptural ambient lamp. Because of the design of the lamp it would be great if I could turn the battery operated light on and off with a remote. I have found the right sized led light but without remote control and it is not weather proof. I am thinking if I assembled the light myself I could make it water tight (the light is for garden use). What I am hoping for is a step by step sort of thing that would teach me about the actual components I would need for this. I am generally pretty handy but I cannot seem to get anywhere in figuring out even the simplest electronics.
