In a bit of an odd teaching situation. Please suggest software and websites appropriate for kindergarten - grade 6.

I'm working two teaching jobs right now. In the mornings, I was hired as a technology support teacher. The idea was that I'd work with teachers on the lessons they're already doing, and help them to integrate technology.

As it turns out, the actual job is much different.

None of the teachers have shown much, if any, interest in adding technology to their established plans. Instead, I've become essentially a computer-teacher or well-paid lab assistant. Teachers bring their students to the computer lab and do everything from relevant to time-sink work. I basically float around, helping where possible.

This isn't what I expected to do, and I feel like I could be much more useful. Do you know of any inexpensive or free software that has innovative or creative applications? Or websites of the same sort?

I'd really appreciate either software/website suggestions, or teachable ideas.

As always, happy to provide any additional information. Cheers!

Scratch, Tux Typing, Tux Paint or maybe GIMP for older kids, BBC Schools. Students can go on virtual field trips via museum websites and/ or Google Earth, and make a Power Point (or the Open Office equivalent) presentation with pictures from the field trip.

I don't know much about this, but it seems like a neat idea:
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.

Cartoon Doll Emporium. Not particularly educational, but a lot of fun (for girls, at least).

Starfall for kindergarten and lower grades. Boowa and Kwala for games and songs and seasonal fun.

Starfall was used in my son's public school kindergarten; I continued to use it during our first grade experience. Thumbs up!
