Tall Leather Frye Boots: Do I need boot socks?

Tall leather Frye boots: do I need tall boot socks with them? I'm thinking about getting a pair of Frye boots, and for some reason, the tallest boots are around $100 bucks cheaper than the lower rise boots at my local shoe store. Can I wear regular ankle length socks with the taller boots without chaffing on the back of my calf, or do I need full length boot socks to be comfy?
Bonus: Waterproofing more distressed leather type boots, such as the Harness 12r and the Jackson Harness.
Thanks!

Thanks!
In the summer I wear mine with no socks at all and no problems.

Best answer: i have the harness 12r and wore them with short socks a couple of days ago. I survived, but wished i had socks that went atleast an inch past my ankle. It wasn't chafed or anything, but probably would have been more comfortable with a little longer socks.

Response by poster: Brilliant!
Thanks everyone.
Any advice on the waterproofing? Beeswax, mink oil, the Frye spray stuff?

I have 3 pairs of Frye boots and I wear ankle socks all the time with them. Fryes are the best boots!
Frye makes their own leather care products. I would trust those. Just be aware that anything you put on the leather will make it darker - even the Frye products:

I like Obenauf's leather care products (which I found out about via Put This On).

I use saddle soap to clean mine, and mink oil for waterproofing. So far, so good.
