Disposal isn't flexible enough

Kitchen disposal's rubber splash guard hardly lets water pass through it - what are my options? Even after 6 mos of use, no sign of breaking in.

Just washing my hands causes the water to back up in the sink even though the actual drain is perfectly fine. Eventually water will pass v.e.r.y. slowly (there are small holes around the ring of the rubber guard). When I use a utensil to press one of the rubber 'petals' of our disposal down, the water gushes away instantly, which points me to the rubber splash guard as the issue.

Before I take a pair of scissors to it and attempt to make the rubber petals of the disposal smaller (is that a horrible idea?), am I missing something?

Just replace it or follow most of the steps to just remove it.

I had the same problem and cut off the tips of the petals. Have had to retrieve the occasional toddler spoon from the disposal, but otherwise no issues.

Best answer: Would jamming a glass or something that just barely fits down it and leaving it that way overnight put a permanent slight bend in the rubber? It might be enough. I'd try that first, and if that didn't work, I'd cut the little petals thinner so they still stuck out, but didn't touch each other.

I think what you've got there is a feature designed to prevent small objects from getting down into the disposal without you noticing.

Garbage disposals are also pumps; the water will go down when you turn the disposal on, won't it?
