itunes authorization quesiton

iTunes is messing with me.

Apparently, at some point in my life, I created two different iTunes account: dpx.mfx and dpx.mfx@school.edu.

I use dpx.mfx for all purchases, etc. We have an iPad, an iPhone, and two laptops.

My husband recently purchased a cd on laptop1. He asked me at the time whether he should turn syncing on. I said yes. The cd automatically appeared on laptop2. However, when I tried to play the songs, it told me I was not authorized. When I tried to authorize it for dpx.mfx, it said "you are already authorized; you have authorized two computer", but would not let me play the music. I tried to authorize dpx.mfx@school.edu, but apparently I can't remember my password. I tried to recover my password through email, but for some reason, no email arrives from apple. I can't recover it through security questions because it insists my birthday does not match.

I think the music was purchased with dpx.mfx. It seems like it must have been, for it to automatically download to the second laptop. But I have no idea how to even begin to tell, and I have no idea why it won't let me play the music, and I feel so clueless about all of this that I don't even know what to google.

Help, please?

You can call Apple support and they will chat with iTunes and have your password reset on the other account. Then you'll be able to log in.

Oh, and look at the properties (in iTunes) of the music you purchased, and you'll be able to see which account was used.

Response by poster: huh. I did manage to figure out how to look at my account history, and the CD isn't on the dpx.mfx account. Presumably it's on the @school.edu account, but I don't understand how that downloaded to my computer if the computer isn't authorized to play it. bizarre.

Could you have used another computer with the @school.edu account to download the album?

I dealt with Apple customer support last year and they were surprisingly responsive. I suggest that you either call or email them to reset your password, or better yet see if they can consolidate these accounts into one.

You can purchased items in the iTunes store with an account that isn't authorized to play. Happens all the time to me when I setup a new Mac.
