English-language print magazines about China?

What's the / is there a good glossy magazine I can suggest to my Chinese ESL students? (And anybody else interested.) A search online comes up with many titles, and most of those sound like they're government publications. Seeking recommendations for the best of those but also anything independent, monthly or even weekly, available via inexpensive subscription in the USA. Thanks!

There's China Now for one.

I'm using Studio Classroom. It's a Taiwanese publication with three different versions geared towards different levels of ESL students, and it's quite good.

Taiwan Panorama (used to be called Sinorama) is a magazine that gives an excellent overview of all different aspects of life in Taiwan. What's more, you can choose to read it online either all in English, all in Japanese, or all in Chinese (simplified or traditional). The original articles are written in Chinese, and native English (and Japanese) speakers provide smooth versions in their own languages. True, this is a government publication, but it doesn't shy away from occasionally discussing some less pleasant aspects of life in Taiwan, so it doesn't feel like "propaganda," if that's what you are trying to avoid.

Here is a selection of topics in their archives:

Art and Culture:
Chinese Culture, Literature, Painting and Calligraphy, Film, Dance, Music, Architecture, Museums, Traditional Opera, Arts Administration, Handicrafts, Clothing and Accessories, Stories Told in Chinese Paper Cuts, Drama, Taiwanese Culture, Photo Essay, Ethnography, Old Songs, Book Review, The Candle Lighters, Games, Language

About Taiwan:
Cities, Slices of Life, Trends, Gender Issues, Community Life, Social Welfare, Religion, Disadvantaged Groups, The Elderly, Youth Issues, Cross-strait Contacts, Taiwan Townships, Disasters, Politics, Law, Public Security, Human Rights, Diplomacy, Global Women Issues

If you want to work with the dead tree format, Taiwan Panorama is also available by subscription in a relatively inexpensive glossy magazine version.

Response by poster: Actually I'm looking for the Chinese mainland equivalent of Time magazine (if such a thing exists) but it would be great if the mainland news also included articles about Taiwan, HK and the Chinese community abroad. As my target audience is mostly from the PRC, would they be interested in a Taiwan publication?

China Now looks great but the website won't let me subscribe, and The World of Chinese seems to be UK-only.

Actually, people in China are very interested in Taiwan, which the PRC government claims as a "rebel" province, even though the reality is the other way around (the communist rebels took over all of China, except for the island of Taiwan). Politics aside, I think your Chinese students will probably enjoy reading about traditional culture and current trends in Taiwan from a different point of view. Show them a selection of recent Panorama article titles and ask them to vote for the ones they consider most interesting. It's worth a try.

Response by poster: I went with China News which is apparently the Chinese Newsweek.
