How can I order a gat (a hat worn by ancient Korean scholars) and get it shipped to England? I'm in the US. I'm looking to spend under $50 total. It doesn't have to be of the highest quality - it's a bit of a gag gift.

So you probably need a shopping/shipping service, unless you know someone in Korea. Google around, but I found these two -- I haven't used them, so I don't know how good they'll be, but they'll buy the item in Korea and ship it to you (or your friend) for a fee.

As for the actual gat, you'll want to google for 양반갓, since 갓 is apparently another word for a vegetable. Looks like there are more than a few places online that will sell them. You'll probably want to know what size -- 大 or 대 is large, and 小 or 소 is small.

If you contact the shipping service and pick the item and explain what you want, they'll probably be able to help you out further.

Good luck!

Best answer: One of the largest Korean online shopping websites, Gmarket, has some features to help non-Koreans buy from them.

Here is a gat on their site for ₩24,200. Delivery to the UK is ₩15,200, so a total of about 35 US dollars.

You can pay with a non-Korean Visa, Mastercard etc. but that may involve some complications around browser plug-ins and if so you will be better off with PayPal. There is lots of Korean on the site, but all of the information you need to complete the purchase should be in English.
