Need a simple Win XP utility to increase the resolution and then smooth curves and angles on some monochrome .BMPs. Preferably freeware. Suggestions? Thanks!

Could you clarify what you need (example maybe?)
You can "increase the resolution" on an image easily enough, using Photoshop, Fireworks, ImageMagick, etc., but that will just copy the existing pixels (it'll still look pixelated), or smooth them out (in Photoshop, for instance) in which case it'll look pixelated and blurry.
Smoothing curves and angles: do you want to blur them or anti-alias them?

Oh, yeah, the Gimp is a freeware image editing program, comparable to Photoshop, in case you want to try it out.

potrace was linked to on AskMe a few days ago. It automatically transforms a bitmap into a smooth, scalable image.
