Where did my elongated wooden hippo come from?

That's not a joke, I can't seem to find any info on this. My wife bought it from a thrift store in a small town in Iowa. Is this a one-off, or was this part of some other collection? He's a little under a foot long.

I don't recognize the piece, but it certainly looks like a Danish modern toy, circa 1950s-60s. And I wouldn't assume it's a hippo so much as a generalized creature.
