Recs near Beacon Theater

Recommendations for food near the Beacon Theater in New York City.

We've got tickets for two of the three Cure shows at the Beacon Theater in New York over Thanksgiving. The running time for the show itself is almost four hours long. Where can/should we go after the show for a late night snack? Guy is vegetarian; I am not. Inexpensive is best. Breakfast places that won't be horribly crowded on Saturday or Sunday? Trendy is not necessary; excellent is also not necessary. Decent and not 90 minutes for a table is good for breakfast.

We're both used to public transportation and being in strange cities and not too bad at differentiating among "normal urban environment", "sketchy urban environment" and "somewhere Not Safe to Be" but any local recommendations about places to avoid (if any) in the immediate vicinity are also appreciated. We get in sometime Friday--is that when the parade is? How awful is that? Tips for making it less awful?

We haven't booked a hotel yet (just checked a couple things to see if every place was booked solid), so we don't know where we're staying in relation to the Beacon, if that makes a difference.

That's about as upper middle class a neighborhood as you can get! And no, the parade is on Thanksgiving day!! There's absolutely nothing awful about any of it.

Not to skirt your question, but Yelp can probably answer this best for you (type in Beacon Theater and you'll have lots of options for eating, drinking, etc)! There are a gazillion places, it's a great 'hood for restaurants.

It's a totally safe neighborhood. Absolutely nothing to worry about. I'm gonna catch one of the shows myself, but any snacks for me will probably be liquid. I'll let some of the locals recommend some veg friendly places.

That might be top two or three safest neighborhoods in New York. I can't think of anything around there even the least bit unsavory.

I know you don't want fancy or expensive but the big draws around there are Bar Bolud ,Oest, and as seen on 30 rock Barney Greengrass ( which will not be open on saturday).

Far more casual, I am personally very fond of Arties on 83rd, not super vegetarian friendly. I would also implore you to try Grey's Papaya on 72nd. I can't vouch for it since I don't like thai but people I know seem to like Lime Leaf on 72nd. There are an insane amount of restaurants around there so it will not be hard to find a spot you like.

I remember going to the Beacon many years ago for a Sigur Ros concert and we caught dinner at Zen Palate before hand. Fantastic vegan food and three blocks away.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, with the official balloon-inflating event happening Wednesday afternoon/early evening. If you get in on Friday, you'll be fine.

The Beacon is on the Upper West Side in the mid-70s; one of the safest places I can imagine. Also a little boring in terms of food, but seems that's OK given your parameters.

For breakfast, perhaps Fairway Cafe inside Fairway, the grocery store. It is known for its pancakes.

After the show, tough request. UWS in the 70s AND late night AND cheap AND vegetarian.

Unfortunately, not a ton in the immediate area is open past midnight, especially on a Sunday night.

If you get out before midnight, try to hit up Hummus Place. There's a Maoz nearby as well (but it closes at 11pm on Sundays). Otherwise, there's always Big Nick's (more of a diner).

I know you don't want fancy or expensive but the big draws around there are Bar Bolud ,Oest, and as seen on 30 rock Barney Greengrass ( which will not be open on saturday).

I like Bar Boulud, Ouest, and Barney Greengrass, but a vegetarian will be missing out on a lot of what's really good at all of those restaurants.

That location of Zen Palate has closed.

There's also a burrito place a block or two south, the chain who's name, incredibly, escapes me at the moment.

You can't go wrong on Columbus ave. There's a bunch of good Indian places just north of 72nd St that are moderately priced. There's also a decent diner on Bwy and 68th or 69th, just a little bit south of the theater. There's plenty of good food around, and I'm a vegetarian myself.

Josie's West has great vegetarian options and is very close.

Given your time constraints (8pm show start, 4 hr running time), I'd recommend having a large-ish meal beforehand. There are a lot of good suggestions here but very few of them are open late (past midnight). The UWS is a pretty quiet neighborhood at night; people go to bed early!
