Femslash 101

New to fanfiction, and interested in femslash but feel a bit overwhelmed finding my way around and getting the feel for the place because there's a whole multiverse out there. Are there any FAQs, gentle introductions, wikis or knowledgeable mefites that can teach me how to learn?
Best answer: Oh, for a wiki, fanlore is probably the place to start. Here is their article on femslash.
Honestly, though, just find your fandoms & once you've found the communities where those fans hang out, watch for a little while to learn how they do things, and then just jump right in.

Best answer: I send JJJJS's recs for joining LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, and AO3. The filtering you're going to need to do at fanfiction.net to find stuff worthwhile is going to be time-consuming, so try the others first. If you want to share your desired fandoms/pairings, we can probably direct you to more useful resources. If you don't want to do it publicly, you can memail me or email at this username at gmail.

Best answer: Nthing JJJJS & Crankylex.
Many fandoms will have an LJ community that's dedicated to finding or recommending fic. A good way to get started is to go to the community and ask for femslash reccs.
With LJ/DW in general, the comms are great resources, but before you post make sure that you check the community guidelines that will be on their 'info' page. Some communities are very relaxed, and some are ruled with an iron fist, and woe betide the person who doesn't tag their posts correctly.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone. Your answers are really helpful.
I'm not sure what fandoms I'm interested in yet, I stumbled upon f/f through the passionperfection YouTube channel and have been reading stories around characters from tv series I'm familiar with.
I was pleasantly surprised by the varied fanfiction world out there but intimidated by its vastness. Thanks for pointing me in promising directions.

If you list the tv shows you're familiar with, I should be able to point you in the right direction (and possibly even rec fic) for those communities. Feel free to memail me, and I'll do my best to hook you up.

As a starting point, if you have LJ (and if you don't, probably sign up for livejournal & maybe dreamwidth and the AO3), just hang out on the femslash_today community. It's a newsletter that tries to gather all the femslash fic, regardless of quality, posted on LJ each day. It's a really great starting point and you can use it to get info about where the femslash communities for each fandom are hanging out. A lot of fandom takes place on tumblr/twitter nowadays, too, but it's not moving as fast as the Great Migration from mailing lists to LJ back in the day, so most everything is still posted on LJ/DW. (Also, word of warning: avoid fanfiction.net, because it is pretty much the bowels of hell - there's some good stuff there, but it's pretty much drowned out by crap).
